More about Reiki

What is Reiki?

"Rei-Ki " is Japanese for Universal Life Force, or translated more literally, it can be interpreted as "Rei" meaning spirit or God, and "Ki" meaning energy - spirit energy; God's energy. In recent western history we have become familiar with "Chi" or "Qi" practices such as Feng Shui and Tai Chi and Qi Gong. The "Ki" in Reiki works with the same energy as the other Eastern energy practices (including martial arts), only in this practice the intent of the energy work is to balance and heal the person receiving the energy.
Most people who receive Reiki report dramatic changes in their sense of well-being both physically and emotionally. Eastern medicine incorporates treatments like acupressure that relieve blockages in "chi," this is similar to what happens with Reiki. It is an important adjunct to any traditional or holistic wellness program.

Reiki has helped people recover from depression, addictions, chronic illness, and more. It will help you feel balanced and more in-tune with your body, mind and spirit. To learn more about how Reiki has helped changed lives visit

Reiki History

The idea of healing energy is ancient and can be found in every culture. Mikao Usui, the founder of the practice we call "Reiki," knew this. After receiving his attunement to this healing energy on Mt. Kurama, a sacred site near Kyoto, Usui began the first Reiki Ryoho (clinic) in Tokyo in 1920s.

Usui's Reiki Ryoho flourished, and he soon won the respect and interest of a Japanese Naval doctor named Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi began using Reiki as well, and it was he who developed the hand positions we use in Reiki today.

Dr. Hayashi opened his own Reiki clinic and treated a young Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata. The results of Mrs. Takata's Reiki treatments were so miraculous, that upon her return to Hawaii, she asked Hayashi to visit the US and help her establish Reiki in the west. Hayashi trained Mrs. Takata to the level of Reiki Master. Before her death in 1980, Mrs. Takata trained 22 Reiki Masters in the West. Reiki Masters in the U.S. can trace their lineage to Mrs. Takata. In Japan, Reiki has spread through the lineage of the Masters trained by Hayashi and Usui Sensei.

Today, Reiki has spread around the world, and is quickly becoming the #1 healing treatment in alternative wellness programs.

What is a Reiki treatment session like?

During a Reiki treatment you will remain fully clothed while laying on a treatment table or sitting in a chair. Your Reiki Practitioner will ask you to close your eyes and just relax while he or she performs Reiki using hand positions and breathing techniques over the chakras and pressure points in your body.
Many people experience a deep sense of relaxation and peace during Reiki; others feel a sense of floating similar to meditation; and many feel a warmth or tingle with the Reiki energy.

Many people experience catharsis during or soon after Reiki. This is normal and is sometimes accompanied by an emotional release or spontaneous laughing. The ultimate result is always good. Most report feeling lighter and at peace after Reiki.
